Ice Safety Tips

Remember these tips when you are out on the ice this winter.

Ice Picks

Have ice picks with you at all times.  These will help you crawl out of the ice if you fall in.  Always crawl back, opposite the way you were traveling.  When you get on solid ice, roll away from the dangerous area.

Write a bio for each team member. Make it short and informative to keep your visitors engaged.

Floatation Device

We recommend you wear a winter gear that floats or a life jacket.  The Striker jacket floats and it is worn by our guides.

Avoid Slushy Ice

Areas of slush indicate areas with heavy snow.  The snow pushes down on the ice, and the water floods up through the cracks.

Avoid these areas.  Instead travel on plowed roads whenever possible.

Drill Ahead

It is safest to drill ahead with an ice auger before you travel on the ice to ensure the ice is thick enough and consistent enough for travel.  Drill a hole every 50'-75' until you reach your desired destination.

Avoid Moving Water

Areas near running water, such as spots where rivers enter or exit a lake can have thinner ice due to the constantly moving water.  Avoid these spots unless you know the area very well and have experience on the ice.
