Detroit Lakes Ice & Fishing Report (12/18/24)

Updated: Dec 19, 2024

⭐️Announcement⭐️

(Updated Thursday, December 19th) I am excited to announce that all Baxstar Houses have been placed on 13+" on Little Detroit, and they are available to rent starting this Friday, December 20th. Customers are able to drive a 4 wheel drive light duty vehicle (such as a 1/2 ton pickup) to their rental house.

There is consistent 13" ice on Little Detroit. For the next week, I recommend fishing where you see other houses on the lake, instead of venturing out to new spots.

NOTE: It is okay to be excited right now, but hold tight! You can trust what you read here now and tomorrow when I update this report. I understand everyone has different requirements to feel safe. If you are concerned with the safety of the ice, please wait a few weeks to book.

Ice Report

With ice in the 9”-13.5” range on many lakes, ice fishing is well underway! Currently there is 13” in most spots on Little Detroit, as well as parts of Big DL nearest the access. What's more, the landscape of Little Detroit has changed to include some permanent wheelhouses. That said, the saying, "just because you can, doesn't mean you should" comes to mind. I recommend waiting a few more days (at the very least) before making any decisions. If you are concerned, wait longer.

Fishing Report

I’ve found bluegills and crappies in various depths, from 10’-24’.  Look for deeper panfish adjacent to underwater bars (points) coming off of shore–by adjacent, I mean to the left of the right of the point.  If there is a deep basin on one side of a particular bar, I would choose that side over the other!  As I mentioned last week, you will find fish of all species in shallower depths from, near the green weeds (this includes walleye).  It’s important to not only switch your lure and change colors, but to change the meat on the hook.  One day they will bite on wax worms, the next a minnow head, and a full minnow the following day!  If they are biting on all of the above, those are the days to try new lures and techniques.  Good luck out there, and be safe!

🔥Did you know you can rent Live Imaging from Baxstar this winter?🔥

That's right! The hottest technology that has taken the fishing world by storm is now available to anyone that rents a house from Baxstar. There is only one rental unit and it is available on a first come first serve basis.
