I hope you all had a wonderful holiday! The ice is in good condition, with 13”-15” covering many area lakes including Detroit Lake. As a rule of thumb, always drill holes ahead as you the first time you fish a particular lake. Avoid the Holiday Inn and Rossman avenue accesses on Detroit for the time being. They are currently blocked off due to irregular ice conditions. They should be safe and useable again very soon.
We have found eyes hanging out around small and irregular weed patches in 12’-18’ but they may be deeper, near structure in some lakes. Try full fathead minnows and minnow heads on spoons, or ripping raps without live bait. Crappies can be found near the bottom around weed lines too, as well suspended over deeper holes. Minnows have outperformed wax worms recently but I would bring both with you. Bluegill are abundant in and around green weeds in 8'-14' and near deeper structure up to 25', and they are literally biting 24 hours a day on wax worms on a small jig. Lastly, we are finding northern pike in abundance in and around the weeds. All you need is a small/medium sized minnow on a spoon or a large minnow beneath a tip up, and you will catch yourself some pike! Thanks for reading. Good luck and stay safe in the cold weather!
