The mantra right now is: follow the baitfish to find the big fish. If you can do that, you’ll have success on area lakes right now. Try trolling with a spinner or live bait rig to start your outing but when you see huge gatherings of baitfish on your fish finder-hit the brakes and toss out a vertical presentation that also allows you to pitch a few feet away from the boat. We’ve had the most luck with a drop shot and a leech, but a bobber and leech is also producing fish in these situations. While leeches are still your best bet for walleye, bluegill and smallmouth, the minnow bite will soon take over and, the later the date, the bigger minnow…I will be sure to keep you updated on that! ‘Gills, largemouth bass, and pike can be found near weeds in 13’-23’, smallmouth are in 20’-25’, and walleye are deeper in 22’-32’. Try to avoid fishing deeper than 30’ though, to protect the fish. Good luck to all of you and thanks for reading!
