This week, we’ll focus on our state fish, the walleye! To begin, consistent weather has led to consistently good walleye fishing the past two weeks. We have caught walleye in a wide range, from 6’ to 24’, with the vast majority in the 18’-22’ range. If your lake of choice has midlake structure, that is the place to fish for 'eyes right now. On lakes without mid lake structure, find the bar that goes furthest into the lake, or simply keep fishing the sharpest break lines-wherever they are! Bottom bouncing with spinners and a leech has produced the most fish recently, but we have also caught many walleye on live bait rigs tipped with a large minnow. We’ve done well pitching jigs tipped with small minnows and leeches toward deep weedlines, too. In other words, walleyes are biting on nearly everything that crosses their path. You just have to find them, first! Good luck to all you walleye anglers out there! Next week, I’ll cover more species.
