I’m often asked when the best fishing occurs during the open water season. My answer is: right now! Lakes are finally warming up and the fish are active. Pelican, Detroit, and Sallie and many other lakes are producing fish of all species. We’re catching most walleye in 14’ to 18’ on slip bobbers with a leach and a jig with a minnow, but big eyes are roaming in shallower weeds, too. Live bait rigs and bottom bouncers with spinners are another great option to consider, especially as the walleyes continue their movement to deeper water where the weeds won’t foul up your rig as quickly. Smallmouth bass are hanging out in shallow reeds in lakes that hold them, while the biggest bronzebacks are making their way to their deeper summer haunts. Crappies are moving deeper, but we’ve also caught a number of slabs in 8’-10’ during the past week too. I suggest you start shallow and work your way deeper, and further from shore.
