It’s officially time to get excited for open water season. Ice has come off many lakes in southern Minnesota, a few small lakes near Fergus Falls and Brainerd are already completely open. Closer to home, Lake Lida was starting to open up over a week ago. Overnight temps are starting to creep above freezing and there is wind and rain in the 10-day forecast, so it’s safe to say we’ll see open water on all area lakes very soon! And you know what that means… It’s crappie time! Starting next week, I’ll dive into Spring panfishing. If you can’t wait that long, go south or get up to Rainy River to catch the tail end of the Walleye season that ends on the 14th or the catch and release sturgeon season going on right now. If you choose to fish walleye up north, fish 17’-22’. Deep holes and sharp breaks are producing trophy fish! Check back next week for the scoop on local ice conditions and the early panfish season. Thanks for reading!
