Get that boat out of storage and get ready for crappie fishing! Warmer weather is coming, and water temperatures will soon follow suit. Once water temps reach the upper 40s to mid 50s, the prespawn stage begins and you’ll start to see a noticeable transition from deeper winter haunts, to shallow, warmer bays. Lakes in the area will still be in the upper 30s and lower 40s as the weekend approaches, but shallow bays will heat up fast. If you get out on the water this week, you’ll want to cover a variety of depths. Some crappies may still be suspended in deeper water near breaklines, while others may already be setting up shop shallow. Very soon, the majority will be in shallow water. Almost anything under a bobber (live or plastic) will give you the best shot at success. Next week I’ll talk more about this subject. Until then, good luck to you who venture out. Be safe, and have fun!
