Panfish anglers are launching boats on open lakes in the 412 area! If you plan to go fishing this week, bring with you a pair of waders or water proof boots. Without docks at public accesses, you may need them to launch your boat. Once you get on the water, you will need to do a little searching for panfish. They can be found anywhere from 3’ to 25’ right now–depending on a variety of factors–but, with water temps in the mid 40s to low 50s, fish will be trending shallower from now on, even before they spawn.
Here are a few tips:
Start shallow. Fish will enter into shallow bays during daylight hours, especially when the sun is shining.
Overcast conditions may push fish deeper to the decaying weedlines from last year, from 8’ to 15’. If you still aren’t marking fish, go to the closest breakline into deeper water. Crappies and sunfish may still be found in 15’-25’ close to their winter stomping grounds.
This time of year, you won't find a rod in my boat without a bobber attached. Small plastics or a small minnow beneath a bobber is your best bet.
Don't be afraid to experiment with scent attracting gels when using plastics. Even if they don't attract fish as advertised, they cover up the Pringles scent on your hands! 😃
That's it for this week. Stay warm, and good luck!
