Detroit Lakes Fishing Report (2/27/25)

Writer's picture: Brady BaxterBrady Baxter

Due to the warm weather, the end of the ice fishing season may be near for those driving vehicles on the ice.  The good news is the ice should hold up for those of you who need to remove your house before next week’s March 3rd deadline. But, if your house is not sitting on wood right now, you may want to remove it before the sudden cold front coming in tomorrow. Nothing is worse than fighting a house that is frozen to the ice!

The warm temperatures and the sun have melted most of the snow on area lakes, creating sloppy conditions everywhere.  Much of the snow on the ground near shore has also melted and, without that insulation, the ground is warming near many public accesses.  Eventually, the warming ground melts the ice near shore, causing it to recede.  This will happen first to lakes with public accesses on the north end, like Little Detroit, as they received the most sunshine..  The cold overnight temperatures forecasted for the next 10 days may be enough to slow down this process but anglers must be vigilant from now on and check the ice conditions before they step or drive onto the lake.  Even though main lake ice is still thick, my suggestion is to put away your truck, sled, or at/utv and walk out to your favorite fishing spot from now on.  Even then, please be careful!  If you are able to make it out onto the lake, bring wax worms with you!  The crappies and bluegills are eating them up like candy right now.

All in all, if air temps continue to cool down, it may prolong the season a few more weeks, but the writing is on the wall, folks!  Now is the time to start getting that boat ready.  The open water season is closer than you think!  I will give you another update on the ice next week.  Thanks for reading!
