That is the biggest Largemouth Bass any Baxstar customer has caught through the ice. Not only was it 20.5", it was fat as heck with a 16" girth. Nice job!
Consistent Weather Is Good
Fishing has slowed down a bit for many anglers in the area. While it is going to be cold for a while, the consistent weather (other than Friday) may actually be a good thing over the next 10 days–regardless of the cold temps.
How To Fish Like A Die-Hard
It’s important to note, fishing is like any other sport. Practice makes perfect, and dedication to the craft pays dividends. More disciplined anglers are catching fish most often, even on tough days. These are the anglers that turn the lights and music off in their fish houses, have their hands on their rods, and eyes on their fish finders at all times. While the bite is fairly light, dedicated anglers like the ones I’ve described are outperforming anglers that simply have their rods in a rod holder and eyes on playing cards! If you prefer putting your rod in a rod holder, use a bait feeder reel, or use a small bobber and keep your bail open. On rattle reels, consider removing your bobber and adjusting the tension of your spool instead. This technique works best for skittish fish that let go of the bait when they feel the buoyancy of a bobber pulling back. Ultimately, the old saying, you get what you put into it, applies. if you are struggling to catch fish, take a note from the die-hards and try the techniques and habits described above.
Where to Find Fish
When it comes to catching fish, the other piece to the puzzle is knowing where to place your house. Crappies can be found near shallow weeds in 8-12’ or suspended above deep holes and other deep structures. Target them and walleyes before sunrise and after sunset. As for walleyes, they are spread out this time of year. You may find them mid-lake at inside turns with sharp breaks, or near long extending deep points. You may also find them entering into shallow green weeds in the evening to feed. The walleye bite is tougher this time of year, but the die-hard anglers mentioned above are still catching them. Sunfish, pike and bass are biting when the sun is out. I like fishing for theses species near weeds lines in 10'-12' but bass may be even shallower. You can also find sunfish adjacent to deep structure like a long bar/point. Bright colored jigs and spoons tipped with wax worms are producing a lot of panfish, and small-medium minnows on a deadstick or on a spoon will catch larger species. Still not sure where to fish?
