Minnows, minnows, minnows…and crawlers. That’s about the ratio we’ve had luck with recently for walleye, plus largemouth and smallmouth bass. Big pike have been attacking big minnows too. We’ve been targeting bass and pike in 16’-22’, and walleyes in 22’-30’. The jig bite has outshined other offerings on my boat this past week, but live bait (Lindy), and drop shot rigs continue to be effective too. For those comfortable straying from live bait offerings, Rapala Jigging Raps and the newer Pitchin' Puppet Minnows made by Northland Tackle offer a great alternative and they target the most aggressive (fun to fight) fish. They are versatile, too, as you can cast and hop them back to the boat or you can pop them off the bottom, vertically. Good luck to all who are fishing the F-M Walleyes Fall Shootout tournament on Big Cormorant. For the rest of you, now you know what lake to avoid this week!
